As McLaren ages, however (the current entity is only eight years old), there will undoubtedly be more candidates for restoration. One differentiator is that, for now, McLaren’s program will only focus on F1 models. Jaguar, Aston Martin, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Ferrari all offer similarly obsessive services. The 1997 McLaren F1 GTR 'Long Tail' was created following motorsport teams convincing McLaren to build a racing version of the McLaren F1, after its initial launch as a road car, to compete in the BPR Global GT Series. The McLaren F1 LM is a track oriented iteration of the McLaren F1 built to honour the five McLaren F1 GTRs that competed and finished the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans in first, third, fourth, fifth and thirteenth places overall. Everything to the limit Without road-car regulations to hold it back, the P1 GTR pushes everything to the limit. McLaren isn’t the only high-end performance automaker to offer a classic vehicle restoration program. The name alone suggests how significant the car is - the first McLaren to use the GTR moniker was the F1 GTR that won the 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours. McLaren says it had to source stock parts from containers that hadn’t been opened in 20 years.Īlong with a certificate of authenticity, the GTR owner (and all future customers of McLaren’s restoration program) will receive a bespoke illustrated book documenting the history of his car. As such, the process of restoring this GTR was tedious. While the standard McLaren F1 is already rare, with just 106 examples produced, the GTR is even more so - only 28 models were outfitted for motorsport.
